Montgomery PD is Safe Haven for Online Transactions

The Montgomery Police Department, in an effort to prevent victimization associated with in-person transactions which originated via online sites such as Craigslist, will begin allowing individuals to meet at the police department to finalize personal transactions.

Our efforts are to provide a safe environment and reduce the potential of criminals targeting victims under the ruse of sale transactions at locations other than the Montgomery Police Department. This initiative is an extension of the department providing a safe environment for parents who have civil agreements to exchange their children for visitation.

Based on our ongoing efforts to partner with the community which we serve, we are encouraging the use of our front lobby, located at 10 Civic Center Avenue, Montgomery, for the purpose of a ‘safe haven’ for buyers and sellers to meet so as to complete their transaction. Any member of the public can use our lobby on Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm. Individuals with larger items that cannot be carried into the building may use the front public parking area for such transactions.

If you choose not to use the Montgomery Police Department to complete your transaction here are a few precautions when meeting someone for the first time to conduct any transaction:

- Insist on a public meeting place; do not meet in a secluded location.
- Do not invite strangers to your home.
- Be specially careful when buying/selling high value items.
- Tell a friend where you are going or have a friend accompany you.
- Take your cell phone.
- Trust your instincts.

The Montgomery Police Department is strictly providing a safe haven and will not facilitate, or otherwise be associated in any way with, any transactions occurring between private parties. Rules of Craigslist and other personal transaction sites should be followed. Also, no such transactions related to weapons of any kind will be allowed at the Montgomery Police Department. Montgomery joins several other departments who have the same or similar program.
