The
Illinois Liquor Control Commission awards a grant to the Montgomery
Police Department to reduce youth access to tobacco
The
Illinois Liquor Control Commission is pleased to announce that
the Montgomery Police Department has been chosen to receive
a grant in the amount of $2,280.00 to establish a comprehensive
educational and enforcement program on minimum-age tobacco laws.
The
Commission, the state's lead agency in developing strategies
to reduce the availability and delivery of tobacco products
to minors, is awarding $1 million in grants to Illinois communities
that are willing to implement a Tobacco Enforcement Program
to reduce youth access to tobacco products. The Commission's
appropriation is from the state's Tobacco Settlement Fund to
offer grants to communities to either initiate programs that
enforce minimum-age tobacco laws or support existing programs.
Grant funds were awarded to those communities presenting a plan
that demonstrates willingness for both short and long-term activities
to educate tobacco retailers and enforce minimum-age tobacco
laws.
Through
the implementation of retail education programs and enforcement
efforts, the Montgomery Police Department is equipping retailers
in our area with the appropriate tools that will assist in reducing
illegal tobacco sales to minors.
