[ARCHIVED] Bagged Leaf Pickup Extended through December 8th

GOOD NEWS!!
Republic Services, our contract waste hauler, has extended the pickup of bagged leaves through December 8th!! They will pick up bagged leaves on the scheduled collection day this week and next week. The first bag is free, but additional bags will require a sticker.
Keep in mind that leaves also can be mulched and used to provide valuable natural fertilizer to the lawn and landscape around your home.
We have received many questions about why the Village's leaf vacuuming program ended last week although there are still leaves on the trees. This season has been unique in that the first frost came very late. Combined with the abundance of rain throughout the growing season, trees have been able to flourish much longer than typical. Many residents have trees that either still have leaves, or just dropped its remaining leaves during recent rains.
Due to multiple reasons beyond our control we are unable to extend the leaf vacuuming service beyond the advertised dates. Public Works utilizes a third-party contractor for disposal of the leaf waste; and the organic landfill that we use as part of our permit with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency stopped accepting leaves as of Saturday, November 26th. Additionally, conditions of the Village’s permit to temporarily use a local site as waste transfer station expire on Wednesday, November 30th. The combination of these two anticipated dates prohibits staff from extending the 2016 program.
