Village of Montgomery Board of Trustees Puts Resident Safety First
Montgomery, IL – After reviewing recent community survey data of the residential homes along and adjacent to Mayfield Drive and listening to the pleas of Montgomery Crossings Townhome and Saratoga Springs residents, the Village of Montgomery Board of Trustees voted May 24, 2021, to close the road to reduce traffic volume and increase safety.
Survey results overwhelmingly indicated that residents from both the Montgomery Crossings Townhomes and Saratoga Springs subdivisions favored closing the street to mitigate existing and future problems. The decision comes after a multi-year process and data collection by the Village of Montgomery and the Montgomery Police Department. This past week, residents living near Mayfield Drive received formal notification of the upcoming installation of closure, signage, and calming measures by the Village. Electronic signage is currently in place along Mayfield Drive, notifying drivers the road will be closed to traffic beginning on or about July 22.
The Village will place barriers north of the Mayfield Drive and Roxbury Lane intersection. The Village Board and staff will be closely monitoring and reviewing the success of this closure implementation and plan to make a long-term decision on the closure of Mayfield Drive within the next calendar year, but this closure should be considered permanent. To that extent, the Village of Montgomery Police Department is encouraging drivers to be mindful of both the speed limits indicated and the new traffic patterns to avoid citations as they will be ticketing those that do not comply. Fire, ambulance, police, public works, school buses, and Village designated contractors (i.e., garbage trucks) are exempt from the closure.
